Installing a Circuitron Tortoise switch machine in anything thicker than a 3/4" subroadbed for which it was design is a challenge. This how-to tip shows, via a line drawing, how the author installed his using a perf board to be flush with the top of the foam subroadbed. Ties and ballast hide the perf board.

Not having enough space at home for a permanent layout, the author build a sectional layout, so that he only has the section in the house that he is currently working with. The other sections are stored in the garage or the purpose-built trailer. He takes the mostly-scratchbuilt 6'x24' layout to local train shows. His 1929-1935 Silverton Central is not modeled after a specific prototype. The simple oval track plan (with only two turnouts) makes it easy to run the layout at a show.
