This is a web site owned by Peter Vanvliet. Its primary focus is to document the construction of my model railroad, which is based on the Pennsylvania Railroad's "Chartiers" branch as it existed in the summer of 1924. The models are in S-scale (1:64). This "homepage" will list the past month's changes I have made to this site, with the latest addition at the bottom.
The "Home Page" button brings you back to this page. The "PRR Chartiers Branch" button takes you to pages that contain all the prototype research information I have aggregated so far. "The Layout" button takes you to the pages of my actual, current model railroad. The "Articles" button is where I document topics that aren't directly related to the construction of my current layout (still a work-in-progress). The "My Library" button takes you to pages listing all the books and magazines I have (still a work-in-progress). The "About" button gives you some background on who I am.
My previous layout, which also was sectional, and modeled the same area, is now history. On March 13, 2021 I started a new one, with everything being the same except for how the framework of the modules is constructed. I also took that opportunity to re-create my web site from scratch again (all old content will eventually return).

I added more prototype photos, drawings, and details to the Canonsburg Hazel Mine page. I completed the construction and installation of the tipple's foundation blocks this week, which you can see on this page.
April 23, 2021
I migrated the documentation of how I built the main building of the coal tipple (done in 2020) over to this new design format (see this page), which included enlarging the photos (click them if so desired). This week I installed the track and painted the below-the-ballast surface layer. You can see step-by-step photos on this page.

This week all I was able to accomplish was applying the first layer of ballast to the module, which you can see photos of at the bottom of this page.

The objective for this past week was to finalize the ballasting of the track, especially under the tipple area; the open area can always be enhanced. I was able to get about 4 layers of various types of ballast applied. The track page has a couple of extra photos of the ballast. So, this brings me back to about where I was in my previous layout (at least for this space). So, I am now going back to focus on building the support structure for the tipple. I have migrated the construction photos of the support structure as it was before I demolished my previous layout to this page, so this is my starting point for this upcoming week. I also added a "Home Page" button on the left. The photo shows the status as of this writing.

This week's objective was to get back to working on the support structure for the Hazel Mine coal tipple. I had started that before I made the decision to demolish my previous layout and build a new one. I did indeed make some progress on the cross braces for the structure, but I ran out of strip styrene, so now it is a matter of waiting for the order to come in. You can see photos, at the bottom of this page, of what I got done this week.
