The freelanced layout measures 45 by 18-1/2 feet and takes up most of the basement. It features four loops that are connected. The layout allows for long trains to be run.

Although similar to a FP unit, these engines were unique in that they were able to run off of diesel or electric. The electric third rail of the Grand Central Terminal (where steam and diesel exhaust could not be used) required this odd arrangement. Prototype photos and scale drawings accompany this article.
