Peter's Model Railroading | The PRR Chartiers Branch | Equipment
GLa

Description

While the GLa class would seem like the next sub class of the GL, they are actually completely different cars. They were a new design, but still thought of as gondolas. The GLa was an all steel hopper that was built starting in 1904 up through 1911. A total of 30,256 were made, so they, too, represent a significant percentage of hopper cars in the era of my interest.

Specifications

These are two-bay hoppers that measured 32'3" end sill to end sill, and had an overall width of 10'1-3/8". They weighed 39,000 pounds and could carry a load of up to 100,000 pounds, or a volume of 1,900cuft. Almost all cars retained their vertical brake shaft. They initially rode on archbar trucks, but most have been photographed with PRR 2D-F8 trucks.
